about

Blackened death metal is a sub-genre that has a bad rap in some circles, and I never understood why. Perhaps some elitists like their music “pure” and decisively only one subgenre, or maybe it’s seen as an unwelcome hybrid by those that only enjoy death metal or only enjoy black metal. Regardless, some of my favorite death metal bands play this style, including Teitanblood, Angelcorpse, Blasphemophagher, Dead Congregation etc. And if done correctly, it can make for some of the most punishing, heavy death metal possible.

Enter Holdkrast. Formed in 2011 in Trapani, Sicily, they released two EPs, in 2013 and 2014 respectively, before releasing their debut full length Vortex of Disintegration in 2018. Clocking in at only 21:05, the album definitely feels like it is longer. Perhaps this is due to the speed and intensity of the music. After a brief into things kick into high gear with Outcomes of Blood and don’t let up till the album ends. The drums are almost always either blasting or at an aggressive snare beat pace. The guitarwork consists primarily of tremolo riffs and fast played power chords, both for the most part atonal, but at the same time quite memorable. Vocals are low-pitched guttural death growls which fit in well with the low-end downtuned guitars.

The music is as catchy as this style can get, sure to have you banging your head, tapping your heels on the ground, driving over the speed limit, or whatever your inclination may be. At 3:04, Outcomes of Blood is the longest song on the album. As such riffs are rarely repeated, and at high bmp, more riffs are fit into a song than one would think. If you enjoy high speed blackened death or “war metal” you will love this. It should also appeal to any death metal fan than doesn’t mind a bit of black metal influence in their death metal. Offhand, Blasphemophagher might be the best comparison I can think of, but the bands by no means sound exactly alike, Holdkrast being a bit more extreme and more death metal-oriented. The only downside to the album I can think of is the relatively short 21:05 duration. But on the other hand, with music this fast an intense, it might be the perfect dose.
